Next Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014, Nadine Riedel (Ruhr University Bochum) will give a talk on Large and Influential: Firm Size and Governments' Corporate Tax Rate Choice .

ABSTRACT

Theory suggests that large firms are more likely to engage in lobbying activities and have better bargaining positions against their host governments than smaller entities. Conditional on jurisdiction size, public policy choices are thus predicted to depend on the shape of the jurisdiction's firm size distribution, with more business-friendly policies being implemented if economic activity is concentrated in a small number of entities. We assess this prediction using the German local business tax as a testing ground. Conditional on jurisdiction size, we find that higher concentration of economic activity is associated with lower local business tax rates. The effect is quantitatively moderate though, suggesting that the rising economic importance of large businesses is unlikely to trigger significant shifts in the design of statutory tax...

31.10.14 Prize of Goethe Bookstore and Rolf-Schwarz-Schütte Award Ceremony

On the 28th of October 2014, the prize of Goethe Bookstore for the best dissertation of 2013 within the entire faculty of business and economics went to Beatrice Pagel ("Three Essays on Unionized Oligopolies"). The Rolf-Schwarz-Schütte Award for the best publication achievement of any junior DICE researcher of 2013 jointly went to Irina Baye ("Targeted pricing and customer data sharing among rivals") and Torben Stühmeier ("Access regulation with asymmetric termination costs").

Congratulations to all of them!

(only available in German) Die Einsichtnahme in die Klausuren "Wirtschaftspolitik" (Modul BV03) und "Grundlagen der VWL II" (Modul MV 02) für Studierende findet am 05.11.2014, 9:30 -11:00 Uhr in Geb. 24.31, Raum G1 statt.

Eine Teilnahme an der Klausureinsicht ist nur nach vorheriger Anmeldung möglich. Studierende tragen sich dafür mit Ihrem Namen und Ihrer Matrikelnummer in die Liste ein, die an Raum 24.31, 01.10 aushängt. Zudem sind Personalausweis und Studentenausweis zur Klausureinsicht mitzubringen. Eine Anmeldung ist bis spätestens 04.11.2014 um 16:00 Uhr möglich.
