Rolf Schwarz Schütte Award 2024 for Kai Fischer

Zoom

Kai Fischer has been awarded the Rolf Schwarz Schütte Prize 2024 for the best publication by a young researcher at DICE. In his award-winning paper “The Heterogeneous Effects of Entry on Prices”, co-authored with Simon Martin (former DICE) and Philipp Schmidt-Dengler, he investigates how the market entry of new competitors influences petrol prices. The study shows that new competitors on the German petrol station market lead to significant price reductions - especially for well-informed consumers. The results have important implications for competition policy and the distributional effects of market entry, especially in markets with strong price differences and heterogeneous consumer information.

The Rolf Schwarz-Schütte Prize, endowed with 1,000 euros, has been awarded annually since 2013 on the recommendation of the DICE Scientific Advisory Board. It encourages and honours young researchers to publish their research findings at a top international level and thus contribute to the international visibility of the DICE.

Kai Fischer, born in 2000, began his economics studies at the DICE in 2017 and completed his Master's degree in 2023. In 2020 - while still studying for his master's degree - he began his doctorate as a research assistant at the DICE, which he will complete in summer 2025. His research focuses on empirical industrial economics and applied microeconomics.
